Hello producers! For this particular blog I will dive deep into the world of virtual instruments. They come in many different styles and capabilities but all attempt to give the producer a sound that resembles a real instrument, and at a much lower price. Technology has advanced to the point that there are now virtual instruments that can give off a sound that cannot be distinguished from the “real thing”, not even by highly trained professionals. Besides quality of sound what also makes a virtual instrument is its capabilities. Some allow you to mix and alter sounds giving you the ability to create your own unique sound. Many come with features such as chopping, reversing, pitch shifting, and many more. Below are some VI’s that I currently own, good or bad.
1. Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra
· Great sound quality
· Easy to tweak
· Takes up a lot of hard drive space and uses a lot of RAM
· Extremely limited in playability
2. Tone 2 Gladiator 2
· Great sound quality (except for its drum sounds)
· Large library
· Uses little hard drive space and uses little RAM
· Excellent editing capability
3. Kontakt 4
· Ease of use
· Allows unlimited addition of sounds
· Editing capabilities
· Works with both a host and stand alone
Anyone that wants to give their VI’s a shout out feel free. It might help lead others to a good experience / or help avoid bad ones.
